Disney fans have known for some time that the villains are coming to Magic Kingdom. Now, we’re finally getting a much better idea of what they’re bringing with them.

During its latest D23 presentation, Disney revealed major new details about the highly anticipated Villains Land, including two major attractions that will anchor what promises to be one of the most ambitious additions in Magic Kingdom history.

A Maleficent Coaster Through the Briars

Perhaps the biggest reveal is a new roller coaster inspired by Maleficent and the infamous briar-filled climax of Sleeping Beauty.

Disney’s early description and concept artwork suggest something much darker and more imposing than the typical Magic Kingdom attraction, with guests venturing into a twisted landscape inspired by Maleficent’s powers.

The attraction will give Magic Kingdom another major thrill ride following the addition of TRON Lightcycle / Run — but with a theme unlike anything else currently found in the park.

The Evil Queen and the Magic Mirror

The land’s second major attraction will take guests into the world of the Evil Queen from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Disney says the attraction will revolve around the Evil Queen and her Magic Mirror, with Imagineers developing new technology specifically for the experience.

That may ultimately be one of the most interesting parts of the entire Villains Land project. Disney has a long history of developing new ride systems and effects around major attractions, and the company is already setting expectations that this experience will feature things guests haven’t seen before.

More Than Just Two Rides

Villains Land isn’t being designed as simply a pair of attractions with some themed scenery around them.

Disney’s concept art depicts an entire environment dominated by jagged architecture, dark forests and ominous structures — essentially the visual opposite of the bright, welcoming lands that have defined Magic Kingdom for more than 50 years.

The land is also expected to include dining and shopping, along with appearances and references to a much broader collection of Disney villains.

That gives Disney an enormous catalog to work with. Characters ranging from Hades and Ursula to Cruella de Vil, Jafar, Captain Hook and others could eventually have a presence within the land even if they don’t receive their own attractions.

A Major Expansion of Magic Kingdom

Villains Land is part of Disney’s massive expansion beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, an area that will dramatically increase the footprint of Magic Kingdom.

And that’s what makes this project particularly significant.

Magic Kingdom has added individual attractions over the decades, but Villains Land represents something much bigger: an opportunity to create an entirely new world inside a park that opened in 1971.

There is still plenty Disney hasn’t revealed, and the finished land remains years away.

But after years of speculation, blue-sky concepts and tantalizing announcements, Villains Land is beginning to look much less like an idea.

The villains are actually coming to Magic Kingdom.
